Imagine a community shattered by the loss of five young lives in a single, devastating car crash. It’s a tragedy that leaves us all asking: How could this have happened? Today, as funerals are held for two of the victims, Dylan Commins and Alan McCluskey, the weight of this question hangs heavy in the air. But here’s where it gets even more heart-wrenching—these young men, both just 23, were on their way to a night out with friends when their lives were cut short on the Ardee Road in Dundalk. Five lives lost, all in their early 20s, and a sixth survivor left with injuries that, while not life-threatening, will forever be a reminder of that fateful night.
But this is the part most people miss: Behind the headlines are stories of dreams, passions, and connections that will now go unfulfilled. Alan McCluskey, a dedicated worker in the fencing business and a pillar of his local community, will be laid to rest in Drumconrath Cemetery following a funeral mass at St Peter and Paul’s Church. Dylan Commins, a mechanic with a love for motorsport and Alan’s childhood friend, will be buried in Old St Mary’s Cemetery after his service at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady. Their funerals, held today, are a somber reminder of the fragility of life.
And the tragedy doesn’t end there. Tomorrow, Co Monaghan will bid farewell to two more victims: Chloe McGee, a 23-year-old woodwork and construction teacher who was also Alan McCluskey’s girlfriend, and Shay Duffy, a 21-year-old who had just completed his plumbing apprenticeship. Chloe Hipson, a 21-year-old quantity surveying student from Scotland, was also among those lost, her memory honored earlier in the week by family and friends in Dundalk. Controversially, some are now asking whether more could have been done to prevent this tragedy—a question that sparks debate and demands answers.
Vigils held at GAA grounds in Louth, Meath, and Monaghan throughout the week have brought communities together in grief, but they also raise a broader question: How can we ensure such a tragedy never happens again? As we mourn the loss of these young lives, let’s also reflect on the roads we share and the responsibility we all carry. What steps do you think should be taken to prevent future tragedies like this?
