Indiana University's football program is making waves, and the university is betting big on its head coach, Curt Cignetti! The university and Cignetti have agreed to an impressive new eight-year contract, solidifying his position through November 30, 2033. This deal comes with an average annual compensation of approximately $11.6 million—a significant investment!
Indiana University President Pamela Whitten expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "At Indiana University, we are committed to performing at the highest levels in everything we do, and no one has exemplified that more than Coach Cignetti." She added, "Put simply, Cig is a winner." This sentiment is echoed by the team's recent performance.
Cignetti's impact has been immediate. In his debut season, he led the Hoosiers to an 11-2 overall record, an 8-1 conference record, and their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance. This season, he's continued the momentum, with Indiana currently at 6-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation. Their recent victory over the Oregon Ducks on their home turf further underscores their dominance. This is a remarkable turnaround, considering the team's 3-9 record before Cignetti's arrival.
But here's where it gets interesting: Before the new contract, Cignetti was already earning $8.3 million annually, ranking 18th in college football and 7th in the Big Ten. The new salary of $11.6 million will place him as the third-highest-paid coach in the country, trailing only Ohio State's Ryan Day and Georgia's Kirby Smart. This reflects the pressure Indiana likely felt to retain Cignetti, especially with potential openings at programs like Penn State and Arkansas.
Controversy Alert: FOX Sports' Mark Ingram urged Penn State to pursue Cignetti. However, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer believes Cignetti can achieve national titles at Indiana. Meyer stated, "They have good enough players and they’re as well-coached (of a) team (as there is) in the United States of America."
This Saturday, Indiana will aim to extend its winning streak against Michigan State. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Peacock.
